The NEC includes specific requirements for electric vehicle charging equipment installation. These requirements ensure that EV charger installations are safe, properly sized, and compatible with your home's electrical system.
Circuit Sizing Requirements
The NEC requires that the branch circuit supplying an EV charger be sized at 125% of the charger's maximum load. For a typical 40-amp EV charger, this means a 50-amp circuit with appropriate wire gauge. This oversizing requirement provides a safety margin for continuous-use equipment.
Dedicated Circuit Requirement
EV chargers must be installed on a dedicated circuit — meaning no other outlets or devices share the same circuit. This ensures the charger receives consistent, adequate power and prevents overloading.
The circuit must be protected by an appropriately sized breaker in your electrical panel. If your panel does not have space for an additional breaker, a panel upgrade or sub-panel may be needed.
Installation Location and Accessibility
The NEC requires that EV charging equipment be installed in a location that is accessible for connection and disconnection of the vehicle. Outdoor installations must use equipment rated for outdoor use and be installed with appropriate weatherproofing.
The disconnect for the EV charger must be within sight of the charging equipment or capable of being locked in the open position.
